Yogas - Their Relevance - Introduction

Astro Guide Mysore

The word "Yoga" means when two or more things meet, or in the other sense is when conditions prevail.

What are these conditions?  For example : Gajakesari yoga is a well know yoga which involves Jupiter and Moon.  The condition for this yoga to exist in one's horoscope is when Jupiter is placed in a Quadrant (Kendra) from Moon.  When this condition is satisfied the yoga is said to form.

Yogas are mainly classified into three important categories: -

1. Chandradi yogas
2. Suryadi yogas
3. Lagnadhi yogas

Chandradi yogas are those yogas which are said to manifest keeping Chandra (Moon) as the key planet of importance.

For example : Sunapha yoga, Anapha yoga, Dhurdhura yoga, Kemdruma yoga, Gajakesari yoga, Amala Yoga etc.

Suryadi yogas are formed when planets are placed in a certain longitude from Sun.

For example : Vesi yoga, Vosi yoga, Ubhayachari yoga, Budhaditya yoga, etc.

Lagnadhi yogas are formed by certain placements of planets from the ascendant.

For example : Adi yoga, Panchamahapurusha yogas (Ruchaka, Bhandra, Hamsa, Malavya and Sasa), Amala yoga, etc.

All these yogas give us an insight into the strength and capability of the native. The yogas are not only analysed to know the timing of an event, but also to understand its intensity depending on how strong the yoga is.

The yogas from Sun (Suryadi yogas) indicate the confidence level of the native. Whether he is conscious of his surrounding, his identity and his practices. Analysis of these yogas show us as to whether the native is hardworking and selfmade.

The yogas from Moon (Chandradi yogas) indicate the mental make up of the native.  It shows how strong is he emotionally. Whether he is fickle minded, fearful or bold enough. The level of financial comfortability is also known from analysing these yogas.

The Lagnadi yogas (yogas seen from the ascendant) are more at the physical level.  They are analysed to know the health, physical makeup and belief system of the native.

Yogas are studied first individually and then in combination so that the combined effect is understood.

There are negative yogas or malefic combinations like the Sarpa yoga, Papa Karthari yoga, Panchamarishta yoga (bad to progeny or children), Aputra yoga, etc.

It is extremely important to calculate the strength of each yoga before going into predictions.
